We’re pleased to share that Dr. Kyle Kesler, fellowship trained spine surgeon with Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics, was recently featured on “3 Plus You” to discuss the important topic of lumbar stenosis. During the interview, Dr. Kesler provided valuable insights into this common condition that affects the lower back and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.
What is Spinal Stenosis?
“There’s a condition called spinal stenosis, and stenosis just means pinching. You can have stenosis of a drainpipe, or of a blood vessel, or it can occur in your back. What that means is the nerves are pinched enough that they’re not functioning properly,” explains Dr. Kesler.
Spinal stenosis occurs when the spaces within the spine narrow, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the lower back. This condition is often caused by wear-and-tear changes in the spine related to aging, but it can also result from spinal injuries, arthritis, or certain genetic factors. Symptoms of spinal stenosis may include pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs, and it can make walking or standing for long periods difficult.
Treatment Options
Dr. Kesler explained that while lumbar stenosis can be a challenging and physically limiting condition, the treatment is effective. The goal is always to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance the patient’s overall quality of life.
“This is a condition that’s very treatable – the surgery for spinal stenosis involves opening up the tube where the nerves are pinched to allow them as much space as possible,” he says. “It doesn’t structurally change your back or require any metal. Patients can return to their normal activities quickly and start moving again without pain.”
