A 2018 inductee to the Tennessee Senior Olympics Hall of Fame, John Disterdick has won more than 500 Master Athletic medals, set multiple state records, and competed in swimming, track and field, cycling, triathlons, and much more throughout his athletic career.
But just over a decade ago, severe knee pain threatened to sideline his athletic journey. Every step and every competition became a struggle, making even daily activities a challenge.
“I had bone-on-bone knee pain, which was constantly painful. I required cortisone shots to even be able to compete,” says John. “I was in pain most of the time, and I had to go down stairs backward due to my knees giving way at times.”
Finding Expert Care at CSMO
Eventually, John knew it was time to seek a more permanent treatment to relieve his pain and restore his mobility. John was recommended to Dr. Tim Ballard at Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics (CSMO).
“Dr. Ballard’s professionalism, knowledge, humility, and overall charisma are very soothing for a patient. He’s a great physician and brother in Christ,” shares Disterdick. “I highly recommend him to anyone who needs surgery.”
After consulting with Dr. Ballard, Disterdick went on to have two total knee replacements. While preparing for surgery can be a nerve-racking process, John felt supported by the team every step of the way.
“They gave me the confidence that they had everything under control, even though I was unfamiliar with all that was happening,” adds John.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
After his surgery, John started physical therapy with the team as he began the recovery process. Though the surgery was over, Dr. Ballard continued to check in on John’s condition.
“My insurance provided therapy, which I used, and I continued on my own with therapy to achieve what the team at CSMO recommended,” says John. “Dr. Ballard followed up with me numerous times to check on my progress and answer my questions.”
With the support of the CSMO team, John regained his strength, mobility, and confidence in his knees.
“I have no more pain, and I can do all the things I desire,” he shares. “I can’t imagine anyone providing better service and follow up as CSMO did for me – I couldn’t be more pleased.”
A Return to Athletic Excellence
Thanks to the expert care provided by Dr. Ballard and the CSMO team, John has been able to return to the sports and competitions that he loves, completely pain free. As of October 2025, Disterdick has accumulated 259 gold medals, 171 silver medals, and 81 bronze medals from the Master Athletic Awards – a testament to his perseverance and the care he received.
Now into his 80s and looking forward to the years ahead, John continues to pursue his athletic goals, attributing his sustained performance and pain-free mobility to the expert care, follow-up, and guidance he received from Dr. Ballard and the CSMO team.
“I don’t have all my youthful abilities, but I can’t complain as to how the Lord has allowed me to have a ministry where athletics are used as the door opener to present the gospel,” finishes John. “Without useful knees, I would not be able to fulfill this dream. I’m so thankful for the blessing Tim and his team have been to me.”
