Flat feet (also referred to as pes planus) means that the feet have little-to-no-arch in the sole when pressure is put on them. When standing, the feet will point outward and the entire soles will touch the floor. This condition can affect one of both of the feet.
While babies are born flat footed, arches begin to develop when they start walking. In some cases, individuals may never develop arches throughout their childhood, but patients can also lose their arches due to different medical conditions, such as an injury or aging.
Because arches play an important role in the mechanics of walking, flat feet may cause pain or problems with movement. Luckily, treatment can help.
At CSMO, our highly trained physicians specialize in corrective surgery to restore the alignment of the feet. Techniques include realigning the bone, repairing the foot’s ligaments, and lengthening the tendons to restore and support the arch. These procedures can help reduce foot pain and allow the patient to return to normal, active daily life.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, pes cavus means having high arches in the feet. High arches never flatten or touch the ground, even when weight is applied. While most individuals with this condition are born with high arches, they can also develop as a symptom of spina bifida or muscular dystrophy.
While mild cases may not cause any issues, high arches can put stress on the feet, causing discomfort, injury, and bone and muscle changes. Over time, individuals may develop calluses, instability of the ankle, and hammertoes. High arches can cause progressive deformity of the foot, making walking increasingly painful, and even leading to knee and back pain.
While orthopedic shoes and physical therapy can help, persistent pain and severe cases can only be relieved with surgery.
At CSMO, our skilled providers specialize in realigning bones in the feet, transferring tendons to help balance, and fusing joints to relieve pain and help the patient bear weight more evenly.
Treatment for flat feet and high arches offers long-lasting relief and improved foot function. Potential benefits may include:
If you experience continual foot pain, issues with walking, or structural changes in your feet, you may benefit from surgical treatment. At CSMO, our highly skilled providers will conduct a thorough evaluation and develop a personalized plan – including surgical options and post-operative rehabilitation – to restore alignment and reduce discomfort in the feet.
When non-operative options, such as orthotics or physical therapy, no longer relieve persistent foot pain, discomfort, or difficulty with walking, it may be time to consider surgery – especially if pain is limiting daily activities, work, or recreational pursuits.
Individuals experiencing constant discomfort, worsening conditions, or significantly limited mobility should consult our providers to discuss a personalized approach for supporting long-term foot health, restoring function, and improving overall quality of life.
You don’t have to live with foot pain or discomfort. Call us today or schedule an appointment online with one of our experienced foot and ankle specialists. We’ll help you restore proper alignment and support for healthier, pain-free movement.
