Dr. Jason Robertson Served as Chattanooga Medical Liaison for World Champions
When Spain lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy, it marked a historic achievement for one of the world’s most respected soccer programs. For Chattanooga, the victory carried a unique local connection. During their time training in our community, Spain’s national team called Chattanooga home, and Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics (CSMO) was honored to play a supporting role in their journey to becoming world champions.
As Chattanooga’s designated medical liaison for the Spanish National Team, CSMO sports medicine specialist Dr. Jason Robertson worked closely with the team’s medical staff throughout their stay. While Spain traveled with its own physicians and athletic healthcare professionals, Dr. Robertson served as the team’s local medical resource, helping coordinate specialty care, advanced imaging, diagnostics, and access to healthcare services whenever needed.
“It was a career highlight,” said Dr. Robertson. “To work alongside one of the premier national teams in the world and support their medical staff was an incredible experience. They were exceptional professionals, and it was an honor to help however we could.”

Throughout Spain’s stay, Dr. Robertson served as the team’s primary local contact for healthcare needs, helping coordinate services ranging from advanced imaging and orthopedic evaluations to specialty referrals when necessary. The experience provided a unique opportunity for collaboration between medical professionals from different countries while reinforcing the universal principles of elite sports medicine.
“Medicine is medicine,” Dr. Robertson explained. “We learned from one another, shared perspectives, and ultimately worked toward the same goal—keeping athletes healthy and performing at their highest level.”

As a fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist, Dr. Robertson has spent more than two decades caring for athletes ranging from youth soccer players and high school competitors to collegiate and professional athletes. His experience includes serving as a team physician, supporting regional athletic programs, and helping establish one of the area’s first dedicated orthopaedic walk-in clinics.
Soccer athletes face unique demands, often covering several miles during a single match and competing year-round. The repetitive running, cutting, accelerating, and directional changes place significant stress on the hips, knees, ankles, muscles, and tendons of the lower body. Dr. Robertson’s experience treating these injuries made him a natural fit to support one of the world’s premier soccer programs.
Whether treating a World Cup athlete, a high school standout, or a weekend warrior, the goal remains the same: helping patients recover quickly, safely, and confidently return to the activities they love.
A Proud Moment for Chattanooga
Spain’s championship is a reminder that Chattanooga successfully welcomed and supported one of the world’s elite athletic organizations during one of the largest sporting events on the planet.
“Not many communities can say they hosted a World Cup champion,” Dr. Robertson said. “That’s something Chattanooga should be proud of.”
