Hip pain can be life-altering—limiting mobility, independence, and the activities patients love most. Fortunately, advances in orthopedic surgery are making relief more effective and recovery faster than ever. One of those advances is direct anterior hip replacement, a technique offered by the experienced surgeons at Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics (CSMO), including Dr. Jason Rogers.
During a recent radio interview, Dr. Rogers shared insight into how this approach is changing lives for patients with hip arthritis and degeneration.
“From a hip perspective, it creates a lot of debilitation in patients. They’re unable to do the things that they want to do. Their quality of life starts to diminish,” Dr. Rogers explained. “Our goal is to re-establish that function and help them regain the quality of life they want.”
What Is Direct Anterior Hip Replacement?
Hip replacement surgery can be performed using several approaches, but the direct anterior approach accesses the hip joint from the front of the body.
“You can go from the front, the side, or the back,” Dr. Rogers said. “The benefit of going from the front is it’s a muscle-splitting approach instead of having to cut through the muscles.”
Because the surrounding muscles and soft tissues are preserved, many patients experience:
- Less post-operative pain
- Faster early recovery
- Quicker return to normal movement
- A lower risk of hip dislocation
“Because you’re not cutting through the muscles, you tend to have less pain and there can be a slightly quicker recovery and return to normal function,” Dr. Rogers noted.
Another key advantage is the use of real-time imaging during surgery.
“We’re able to take X-rays during surgery to make sure the implants are going in correctly—and we’re dialing it in perfectly as we’re doing the surgery.”

What Recovery Looks Like
One of the most encouraging aspects of anterior hip replacement is how quickly patients begin moving again.
“You are up and walking within hours,” Dr. Rogers said.
Most patients can expect:
- Return to most activities within 6–8 weeks
- Feeling largely “normal” again by 2–3 months
“The fortunate thing about hip arthritis is it tends to be a little bit easier to recover from than a knee or a shoulder,” he added.
Patients often notice an immediate difference after surgery.
“They no longer have that arthritis pain,” Dr. Rogers said. “They have surgical pain, which is much easier for us to manage.”
Modern Implants Designed to Last
Hip replacement technology has advanced significantly over the past decade.
“These implants are so good now. The techniques that we use are so advanced, and the anesthesia is so advanced,” Dr. Rogers explained.
Today’s hip replacements typically use metal or ceramic components paired with highly durable plastic, designed for excellent wear characteristics and long-term performance.
“Our hope is that these implants last for the rest of a patient’s life.”

Experience Matters
Dr. Rogers has nearly a decade of experience as an orthopedic surgeon, with more than 16 years in surgical practice and training combined. He credits ongoing innovation for raising both patient expectations and surgical outcomes.
“The technological advancements—even in the last 10 years—are pretty remarkable,” he said. “It’s really allowed us to do a lot of fun things for patients and get them back to their normal quality of life.”
That impact is reflected in patient stories shared during the interview—patients returning to physically demanding jobs, snowboarding again, traveling without pain, and simply enjoying daily life.
“I feel like I have one of the greatest jobs in the world,” Dr. Rogers said. “We’re able to help patients get back to a normal life that they’ve been missing for a long time.”
